3rd 9 weeks
Shakespeare Unit Begins Jan. 27, 2020
Note to students and parents: We will be using a class set of books to read "Romeo and Juliet". There will not be a copy to bring home, If you would like to purchase a book for your student, we use the No Fear Shakespeare- Romeo and Juliet version of the book. It is about $6.00 dollars. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to read the play on their own. We also listen to an audio of the book in class. There are free PDF's of the book online and there are also audio recordings. In addition, there are phone apps with audio and translations to Modern English. Most of them are free as well. Here is a suggested websites to read or review the play: https://www.nosweatshakespeare.com/shakespeares-plays/modern-romeo-juliet/ |
Notice to students and parents: This 9 week session we will do a lot of writing. We start with an expository essay which is due Jan. 16th. Students have read the instructions and signed a plagiarism contract promising to do their own work. If a student is absent for any reason on the deadline when an essay is due, they must be prepared to turn the essay in the day that they return from the absence. This rule includes excused absences, sporting events, and field trips. A student or parent must email me at [email protected] if they need an extension for any reason. I will look at the situation on a case-by-case basis. A letter grade is taken off each day an essay is late. Students have ample time to complete the essay and the planner. They are working on the essay using their Microsoft Office 365 account, so they can easily work on the essay at home as well as in school. I will not accept an excuse that a student couldn't print an essay. If printing is an issue then as a last resort the student my email it to me or share it of using their Office 365 account.

2nd 9 weeks
Notice to parents: Beginning the week of Oct. 21st, your English I student will begin reading our first novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I will distribute a school copy of the book to each student. If a student has their own copy that is fine to use. Student must bring the book to class every day. Lost books must be paid for at a cost of $9.00.We will read selections from the book in class, but it will be the responsibility of the student to read other parts of the book at home as homework. Each day I will assign a few pages to read of review at home, so there will be homework almost every day. I will assess the student’s knowledge of the book based on tests, study guide notes, chapter quizzes, group discussions, writing assignments, an essay, and what I call one question quizzers. The one questions quizzers are short answer questions the day after an at-home reading assignment. Students who don’t read the book will have a difficult time passing this nine weeks, so please encourage your child to read.
I will post the reading assignments on the agenda/board in my room each day. As a courtesy, I will often I send home reminders through REMIND. Students may take a picture of my agenda/board. I will not post the exact reading pages on my website since they and are often different for each of my five classes depending on the time spent on discussions. If your child is absent, on a field trip, or at an athletic event and misses the selections that we read in class, it is their responsibility to catch up. If a student needs additional support understanding the themes, characters, or the plot, they may go to websites such as www.sparknotes.com or www.shmoop.com for additional resources, but reading the summaries on those pages is NOT a replacement for reading the actual book. Of course, I’m available Monday-Thursday 8:30-9:00 for tutoring.
